First, they haven't figured out why an average American would purchase a tablet. Now, I love technology, I have a 3D TV, an HTC EVO phone, a CR-48 chrome notebook (I am a chosen beta tester for Google), 6 computers in my house (including the CR-48), but I haven't picked up a tablet yet. If someone who is a technology enthusiast, some may say innovator or early adopter, hasn't picked up a tablet, why would the average person? Sure, tablets are cool right now, and people who aren't enthusiasts are getting them. Some are trying to stay up with the Joneses, some are winning them as contest prizes, and others are becoming early adopters for the first time. But the majority of people aren't picking them up, and the first reason is simple. People don't need another piece of technology to do something they can already do with a laptop or netbook that they own. They need something more than that...
They also haven't figured out that if someone is going to spend the money, they expect all the features. This was a big thing with the iPad, there was no camera! Why are tablet manufacturers designing tablets without the newest features that people expect. If it is in their phone, why don't tablets have it? If the masses are to purchase tablets, they better have the technology to last a long time. With the price of tablets, they are an investment for people, similar to a computer, not something that they will be able to afford to replace every year or two like cell phones. Make them with the new technology, like USB 3.0, BT 4.0, 8mp back camera, 3mp front camera, a good lens for both cameras, NFC, DNLA, more memory, a 64gb + capable microSD slot, and good speakers. Notice, I didn't ask for HDMI out and the USB 3.0 should be micro. This leads me to the biggest thing that the manufacturers don't understand.
I want a FANTASTIC dock. I don't want a speaker dock or a charging dock. I want a dock that I can connect Ethernet, hold my tablet up so that I can type with a wireless keyboard (that's included with the dock), a wireless mouse (also included), DVI and HDMI out, multiple USB ports (for cameras, hard drives, etc), thunderbolt compatibility, headphone jack, etc, and as such allow the tablet to replace my computer. That would be AWESOME! And the dock should be able to tilt the tablet forward and back so that I can adjust the camera and screen.
These things would allow much faster and greater adoption on tablets. I understand that it would cut into notebook sales, but are consumers going to continue to buy both with the change to the cloud? I know that I can do pretty much everything with my CR-48, not needing most of the requirements from a normal computer. I think that the tablet (especially as technology gets better, smaller, faster, and requires less power) will replace the home computer in the future and more people will leverage apps in the cloud (like Google Docs) allowing this to happen. With desktop virtualization, it's possible that your work computer could be hosted in the data center and you access it via your tablet 100% of the time as well. I guess we will have to wait to see what the future brings, but it doesn't mean I can't dream! :)
And on a side note, it would be great to get a screen that covers the tablet that is matte finish, cuts out glare, helps with privacy, and when you don't need it and want the normal screen, it peels off easy and attaches to the back of the tablet.
And one more note. The ASUS Padfone is cool, but they missed one MAJOR thing. No one wants to put their phone in the tablet. Instead, make a chip, card, or something that you can take out of the phone and place into the tablet that will transfer all of your data instantly. That way you can still leverage your mobile contract (it would be attached to the chip, card, or something) so that if you receive a call your tablet will ring and you can browse the web on the road with your tablet. This chip, card, or something would also allow you to use it in many other items (think a TV that can do video calling and has all your information when you transfer it, a traditional laptop or computer that can leverage the slot, etc) without having to create big slots for phones. Of course, the chip, card, or something would have to be able to be powered enough to not die when transferring devices. But something definitely cool that could come in the future.
Well, thanks for your time and for reading my blog, I hope you are able to join me next time!!!
